Lake Hiawatha Fire Department

Memorial Day Services 30 May 2005

Memorial Day was created by "General Order No. 11" of the Grand Army of the Republic issued by General John A. Logan on May 5th 1868. It's purpose was to honor those who had fallen while serving their country during the Civil War. This order was the administrative recognition of an occuring phenomen. The graves of the fallen were being covered with flowers, and their sacrifice was honored.

The Department makes a point of remembering on this day ALL who have served our country not simply those who perished in it's service. We also hold a service were we honor the memory of our brothers who have gone before us. Lake Hiawatha Fire Department has never had a Line of Duty death and we pray that we never do.
