During 1972, while the new pumper was being built, the members of the Lake Hiawatha Fire Department requested that the Board Of Fire Commissioners consider placing an Indian head on each door of the new apparatus instead of just the standard lettering that had been used previously. It was also discussed that a standard full dress Indian head was not right since Hiawatha was an warrior. The Commissioners honored the request and asked that the artist at the Young Fire Equipment Company paint a Warriors head on the new apparatus. When the new 1972 Young was delivered, it was not at first realized that the artist used the Indian Head Nickel for the final product. Since then, all Lake Hiawatha Fire Apparatus has had this design grace its apparatus, both new and when re-furbished. |
